@Trinacria1973 we were catholics here in Sweden before the luther reformation back in the early 16th century. This is one of the few traditions? that we still have that has survived, it is also influenced by older pagan traditions aswell. such as celebrating the light at the darkest period of the year etc. Sort of a mix btw catholic and old pre-cristian traditions. I love this. I am half Swedish and I grew up with this. I get tears when I hear this song. The legend in Sweden is that in medieval times there was a famine and on Lake Vanern in Sweden, a boat appeared with a woman? radiating light at the bow. She alighted on the shore and gave the people food and clothing, and then returned to the boat and vanished into the lake. A translation: "Night casts its heavy veil, O'er homes and dwellings, And as the twilight fails, Cold woods are calling.

Amazing video. Absolutely amazing. And to those saying Pavarotti's voice was louder than Sutherland, that's only because of the recording. Many voices sound HUGE in recordings, but are actually not in real life. Sutherland's voice was always said to surround anyone when she sang, and her voice was far bigger than? Pavarotti's. I'm not saying his voice wasn't strong, though, because it certainly was. Sutherland's voice was the size of Nilsson's, only with a more lyric, less steely sound.

@FeelinMinnesota Pavarotti was a lot louder than Sutherland, but I am not saying this to offend her because she is one of my favorite sopranos maybe my favorite. She may be as not as loud as Pavarotti? but she is one of the loudest ever. She is in the league of the dramatic sopranos, a little less loud than Dimitrova and Nilsson but definitely a lot louder than Callas. And being in the league of Nilsson it is amazing how her voice is so agile to sing coloratura.

@FeelinMinnesota And there are a lot bigger voices than Sutherland. Nillson, Dimitrova, Tucker, MDM, Filipeschi etc. The biggest female voice is maybe Dimitrova, and she was drowned Pavarotti in? Tosca 1985 so Pav was amazingly loud especially for a medium sized voice but thats because his technique and the travelling ability of his voice vere awesome. The loudest singer ever is maybe the tenor Carl Haus, or Ginno Peno. After them are Tucker, Pav, Corelli, MDM and after them Nilsson, Dimitrova...

On the recording the female voices are more appealing and sound louder than they are and the male voices sound less loud than they are. @robsargent4: That's not to say Lanza wasn't a very good singer. I'm not so much an Opera snob. It's a matter of taste. I agree with most snobs and prefer Caruso and Bjorling to all other tenors. On the female side, I prefer Sissel to all other sopranos and singers. The purists will say her voice isn't as full as they'd like (Callas, etc.) for opera, but to me, she's got the most beautiful and versatile voice I've ever heard. She does everything from Country, to Popular, to? Opera very well.

We all hear the same? sounds differently and therefore we each have our own very individual preferences. For me, the memories I associate with a particular song or performance have a lot to do with it.

You people have to get around more. Lanza does a good job on? this song, but is only adequate on others. Until you've seen and heard almost everything on YouTube done by Caruso, Bjorling, Gigli, Corelli, delMonaco, Pavarotti, and a few other top tenors, don't declare Lanza the best. For example: Caruso 'E lucevan le stelle' 1904 digital remastered version. Caruso 'Una furtiva lagrima.' Bjorling 'O holy night." These were benchmark performances. Santa Lucia doesn't bring out a tenor's depth.

I ended up here while researching European Christmas usages for my students and I spent 9:25 in total awe! The songs and the choir are wonderful and although I didn't understand? a word (except for Jul and Santa Lucia), I enjoyed every second of the performance and will watch the other videos of this concert :) Greetings from Germany and God Jul :)
